The Cape Henlopen High School golf team lost a close one to Sussex Tech May 14, adding a second loss to the season for the Vikings.
Playing at Tech’s home course, Peninsula Golf & Country Club, the Vikings lost 177-183, with the stroke differential coming from Tech’s medalist for the day, Foster Haynes. He posted a fine even-par 36 on the front nine, in sunny but breezy conditions.
Cape’s best golfer for the day was Matt Zehner, who shot a 44. “I parred the 7th hole, a par-five, and lipped out a birdie putt,” he said.
Quincy Duckworth had a 45, and said, “This was a tough course. I pretty much bogeyed my way around, except for a par on the 9th hole.” Duckworth also showed me his self-described “go-to” club, a six-iron. The club’s shaft snapped in two during the round, a few inches below the top of the grip. Duckworth was worrying about having the club repaired in time for the state championship tournament.
Maddie Baptiste described her 47 as “really frustrating. I started with a triple on the first hole. Then I had a bunch of pars and bogeys, and I thought maybe this will turn out okay. Then I doubled the last two holes. I had some lip-outs on my putts,” she said.
Mason Jones also posted a 47 to complete the team’s scoring.
The Vikings total was enough to defeat Woodbridge High School’s squad, 183-208, which lost to both Cape and Tech in this repeatedly rescheduled tri-meet.
Cape’s win-loss record for 2015 matched last year’s total, with the two losses coming from the same two teams. The Viking coaches expect the team to bounce back and perform well in the upcoming conference and state tournaments.
