Delaware Junior Golf Scholarships awarded

The Delaware Junior Golf Scholarship Fund recently announced the 2026 winners of college stipends for incoming freshmen demonstrating academic excellence, community involvement, and a strong relationship to golf.
This year’s recipients are among the largest groups of awardees in its history. The Fund also celebrated its 40th anniversary of supporting young golfers with collegiate aspirations.
Many are heading to the University of Delaware, but others will go to places such as Bradley University in Illinois, Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, West Virginia University, and Methodist University in North Carolina.
Meredith Finger, a graduate of Archmere Academy in Claymont, received the Robert McCurry Award, worth $12,000 per year for a total of $48,000.
Anna Firko, a graduate of Concord High School in Wilmington, received the R. Gerald Medd Award for $10,000 per year or $40,000 total.
Kingston Davis, a Cape Henlopen High graduate, received the Ron Barrows Award, worth $4,000 per year or $16,000 total.
Jack Okonowicz, an Appoquinimink High School graduate, received the James Powell award for $3,000 per year or $12,000 total.
Jack Dale, a Sussex Academy graduate, won the Gene Bayard Award, worth $3,000 per year or $12,000 total.
Ryan McNett, another graduate of Cape Henlopen, won a scholarship for $2,000 per year or $8,000 total.
Henry Nowak, another graduate of Archmere Academy, won a scholarship for $1,000 per year or $4,000 total.
Chad Hughey, another graduate of Cape Henlopen, won a scholarship for $1,000 per year or $4,000 total.
Mason Pusey, a Delmar High School graduate, won a scholarship for $1,000 per year or $4,000 total.
Grayden Ripanti, an Odessa High School graduate, won a scholarship for $1,000 per year or $4,000 total.
The fund is holding its annual fundraiser Sept. 1 at Rehoboth Beach Country Club, complete with a silent auction.

18th Pinky Returns golf fundraiser a success
Julie Dickson, an avid Cape Region sportswoman who died in 2016, was the inspiration for the Pinky Returns fundraiser tournaments.
Kings Creek Country Club hosted the 18th annual Pinky Returns golf tournament July 20, with 150 women playing the popular fundraiser.
The event supports the Julie Dickson Foundation, founded to support women for education and leadership potential. Dickson coached several sports programs and helped form the U.S. Field Hockey Federation. She also served as a city councilwoman for Lancaster, PA.
This year’s tournament netted over $11,000. Past proceeds generated scholarship funds for women at Delaware Technical & Community College, as well as support for the Strive Foundation, aimed at engaging women athletes showing leadership potential.
Diane Herndon, Erin Reid, Sara Cavendish, and Wendy Bunce won first gross in the first flight, followed by Chris Emery, Deb Ward, Judy Rayner, and Marie Murray in second.
Ann Huffman, Carol Hersey, Diane Riggins, and Lesley Corydon won first net for the first flight, with Carey Fagan, Danette Travaglini, Roxann Koren, and Sandy Dinelli taking second.
Donna Talla, Dorothy Filbert, Joann Talla-Davis, and Shelly Conaway won first gross in the second flight, followed by Ann Huston, Hope Adams, Jennifer Walker, and Laurie Bruner in second.
Linda Kelleher, Rae Von Doehren, Linda Van De Wiele, and Sherry Schaffer won first net for the second flight, with Jean Chlastawa, Pam Cranston, Sandy Neverett, and Susan Griesemer taking second.
Deborah Chase, Renata Price, Terry Barrera, and Yona Zucker won first gross in the third flight, followed by Darci Whitehead, Kara Bourdreau, Kathy Andrus, and Tracy Gordon in second.
Ann DeBlasi, Donna Romer, Nancy Mayott, and Stephanie Roash won first net for the third flight, followed by Francie Young, Hope Lavachia, Margaret Rebarchik, and Susan Julbe in second.
GAP Super Senior
The Golf Association of Philadelphia/Delaware State Golf Association held its Super-Senior championships Aug. 5-6 at Maple Dale CC in Dover, for players aged 65 or over.
Mike Hall of Wild Quail G&CC won the Championship Division, with Paul Hufschmidt of Maple Dale winning the Legends contest. Elizabeth DiNicola of Plantation Lakes G&CC won the Women’s Division.
Cape Region golfers who competed included Doug Johnston of Plantation Lakes, Michael Polise of The Peninsula, Jim Grigsby of Bear Trap Dunes, and Sueann Bennett, Linda Griffin, Jeff Baxter, and Paul Dillon of Cripple Creek. Cape Henlopen High assistant golf coach Lisa Hutchins and her husband Jim were also in the mix.
Crehan ace
Congratulations to Jim Crehan of Long Neck Shores for his second-ever hole in one, made July 22 at Maple Dale CC while playing the Yetter Men’s Traveling League. Crehan’s first ace came at Baywood Greens four years ago.
Local club competition results
The Kings Creek CC 9-Hole LGA played a Team Miami scramble game Aug. 6.
Terry Barrera, Tish Brey, Deborah Hinderer, and Dina McCullough won first place, with Christine Coffin, Susan Julbe, Kim Kavchok, and Annette Stellhorn taking second.
Amy Lyons, Chris Piasecki, Brenda Schilli, and Joanne Yurik finished third.
The Kings Creek CC 18-Hole LGA played a Team 3, 2, 1 game Aug. 6.
Leslie McClintick, Jean Chlastawa, Jeannine Doane, and Leslie Ledogar won first place.
Erin Reid, Sally McGovern, Gail Letts, and Roberta Monkman finished second, with Lisa Schofield, Lesley Corydon, Camille Nichols, and (blind draw) Monkman taking third.
