Last minute Christmas golf gift opportunities
December 17, 1999
Only one week remains until Christmas. Have you started shopping yet?
Here are some suggestions for gifts for golfers in the Cape Region.
Today’s the big day at Kings Creek Country Club, near Rehoboth Beach. Ty Mayers, the club pro, says his shop will be open on December 17 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Everything there is on sale at 30 to 50% off for that day only. Otherwise, the pro shop is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (227-8953).
At Baywood Greens Golf Club in Long Neck, they’re knocking 25% off logo golf shirts and some golf ball brands. Tim Mumford and his staff will be there from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help with your selections (947-9800).
Club pro Rich Bordeaux is running a winter sale at Bethany Bay Golf Club. Most items at his pro shop are marked down with 20% discounts. The Ocean View area course is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day (539-3833).
The new Angola area public course, Marsh Island Golf Club, offers gift certificates for playing the course as well as merchandise, such as hats and logo shirts. Stop by or give Randy Fenimore a call at 945-4653 between 8 a.m. and dusk.
Ron Barrows, the club pro at Rehoboth Beach Country Club, is running a special on Taylor Made and Cobra brand clubs, at 25% off. Summer wear items can also be picked up at 25 to 50% off. The pro shop off East End Drive is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (227-3616).
Cripple Creek Golf & Country Club, near Ocean View, is not running any special sales for the holidays. Head pro Bob Crowther and his gang are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., however, with their normal bargains (539-1446).
Mike Hunter is the club pro at The Golf Park at Rehoboth, off Country Club Drive outside Rehoboth. His pro shop is holding a “golf shoe blowout, featuring Foot-Joy and Etonic brands.” Hunter is also discounting logo golf shirts and golf bags. The store is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and gift certificates for playing The Park’s courses are also available (227-2500).
Scott Jamison, assistant club pro at The Salt Pond, said they have “tons of stuff” available for the last-minute shopper. In addition to gift certificates for playing the course, they have a wide selection of logo hats, windshirts, golf balls, and bags for sale. They’re also running a special on LaMode shirts. The Bethany area pro shop is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (539-7525).
While you’re in the southern end of the Cape Region, stop by Bear Trap Dunes, off Central Avenue west of Bethany. In addition to pro shop items, the new public course also sells gift certificates for playing times. For directions, call 1-877-BEAR-TRAP.
Finally, there’s also Golf Day, the big new player in Cape Region golf merchandise. Ed Larkins, who manages the shop on Rehoboth Avenue Extended (227-3347), is really pleased with the response to the new store, just past its first anniversary. He’s doing what he can to keep up the action during the holidays. Larkins singled out for consideration his discounts on Calloway Golf’s Great Big and Biggest Big Bertha drivers and fairway woods, as well as Titleist 990 irons and Hogan Apex forged blades.
On December 23, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., ESPN will show highlights from this year’s Oldsmobile Scramble National Finals at Disney World. I plan to tape the show and search frame by frame for pictures of the Kings Creek gang.
I sure know how to have a good time.
